pride and prejudice vs 2013

day three

"Yes, we often walk to Meryton. It's a great opportunity to meet new people. In fact, when you met us, we'd just had the pleasure of forming a new acquaintance." Elizabeth Bennet

thus... in the hopes of forming a new acquaintance i set off! i didn't quite walk all the way into town but i did walk for at least twenty minutes which i believed should have given me ample amount of time to "meet new people". i came across one girl who was wearing a rather ugly coat but i still thought we could be friends. she seemed reluctant to give me any eye contact though... not sure why... perhaps she was not in the mood to form a new acquaintance today.

isn't it funny that when one comes across an elderly person or people, one expects them to be sweet and kind and have and endless supply of candy or freshly baked goods in their pockets... if i were elizabeth or jane or mary or kitty... maybe not lydia... i believe they would have invited me in for a game of bridge and light tea refreshment. these old biddies more or less looked at me weirdly as if to say... i'm old! if you get in my way i will trample you with my walker and throw stale candy and baked goods onto your arm pits!

don't be disheartened... i did struck acquaintance gold!... a young lad unloading a truck eagerly waved at me as i walked past... it made me feel uneasy and i didn't really want to wave back so i gave him an awkward smile and crossed the road... i have to admit i was a little scared he may stuff me into his van and drive off, plus we hadn't been formally introduced so i think it was all for the best.

sadly i don't think you can make new acquaintances any more by walking into town. people are too scared they might get murdered or accidentally meet a crazy person (cos murderers aren't crazy!) in their efforts for friendship.
